Two Yezidis Activists Detained in Syria

Washington - Oct. 28, 2008 (RPS News) -- RPS has learned from the Human Rights Organization - MAF in Syria (www.hro-maf.org) that two Kurdish Yezidi (Zoroastrist) activists have been detained illegally the evening of Sunday October 26.

Saadun Mahmoud Sheikho and Mohammad Saeed Hussein belong to the leadership of the Yezidi Party in Syria. Yezidis have been historically prosecuted by both Islamists because of their religious beliefs based on man's interaction with nature and the heavy influence of Sufism and the Assad regime for activism.

According to MAF, a security patrol forced its way into Sheikho's house at 11pm and an hour later the same patrol detained Hussein. It is not know what charges have been leveled against the two activists.

Ever since the west has attempted to engage with Assad in the hope he will reform himself and his regime, Assad has clamped down hard on dissidents inside Syria no matter their affiliations or beliefs. The Assad regime is unable to tolerate dissent because it understands the harm it is bringing to Syria's footsteps.

MAF condemned the arrest and asked the international community to shed light on the situation of human rights inside Syria.
