The Feqi Huseyn Sagnic library was recently opened in Wan. The library is founded by the TZP-Kurdi (Kurdish Language and Education movement). TZP set up KURDI-DER (Union for the Development and Protection of the Kurdish Language) as a daughter association for the organization of the library. The main goal of the library is to promote and develop the Kurdish language.
Qatir Bateyi of KURDI-DER
Until the recent reforms by the Turkish government in 2002, it was impossible to set up a Kurdish library. This library will be one of the few Kurdish libraries in Turkey with mostly books in Kurdish. Another Kurdish library is located in Istanbul.
Qatir Bateyi, member of the board of directors of KURDI-DER, declared that their goal is to get 5000 new members in one year. “The goal of this union is to make the Kurdish population aware that this language is their existence. We also try to stimulate Kurds to put ’Kurdish' [language] back on the agenda and to spent more time on their mother language,“ said Batey.
The library is named after the Kurdish linguist, writer, politician and intellectual Feqi Huseyn Sagnic. He was one of the founders (together with Musa Anter and Seydaye Dilbirin) of the Kurdish Institute Istanbul and a prominent member of the KDP-T (Democratic Party of Turkish-Kurdistan). On 12 March 2003 he passed away in a hospital and was buried in Tetwan.
Every year the Kurdish Institute in Instanbul selects one outstanding contributor to the Kurdish language to win the Feqi Huseyn Sagic award. This year the Kurdish linguist and historian Malmisanij received this honour, for his efforts to develop the Kurdish Zazaki-dialect.
The library calls people to sent their books to the following address :
Cumhuriyet Sokagi, Oz-Gul Center Is Merkezi K. 3 No: 3 Van.
E-mail address: [email protected]. Telephone number: 0090 432 215 64 57.
