US, Iran, Turkey appreciated Barzani’s role in solving govt. formation conundrum

Erbil, Nov. 13 (AKnews) – The U.S., Turkey and Iran appreciated Massoud Barzani, the Kurdistan Region president’s efforts which finally led to the constitution of the new Iraqi government, Kurdistan presidency website reported Friday. Barzani introduced his initiative to break through the political stalemate Iraq faced as a result of controversies over the allocation of the key posts. The ensuing meetings to discuss the proposal could mostly end the disputes and gather the lawmakers in parliament Thursday to elect the countries leaders.

According to the Kurdish website the U.S. president, Barak Obama has extended his gratitude to Barzani through the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. Besides, Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish foreign minister and his Iranian counterpart, Manouchehr Mottaki also called the Kurdish president Friday to congratulate him. Both officials paid tribute to Barzani’s “successful” initiative and the Turkish official reiterated the support of his country to Iraqis.

The disputes over the posts had delayed the government for almost eight months. Thursday’s parliament assembly ended the impasse. Osama al-Nujaifi from the al-Iraqiya was elected as the parliament speaker with Qusay Suhayl as his first deputy and Arif Tayfur as the second. Jalal Talabani and Nouri al-Maliki also secured their positions for a second term as the Iraqi president and the prime minister, respectively.
