[i]Kurdish Dissident Arrested In Syria
Washington DC - July 21, 2008/RPS News / -- Mohmmad Mussa, Secretary General of the Kurdish Left Party in Syria, was arrested on Saturday by the Syrian security forces. His whereabouts are still unknown. Mussa was arrested using the powers of a set of emergency laws that have been instituted in Syria under the Assad takeover of the country for over 45 years.
This is not the first time Mussa is arrested. Previously, he was placed under surveillance and questioned on several occasions because of his political activities and for talking to the Arab media about Assad's oppression of the Syrian people and in particular the Kurds.
The Kurdish Left Party issued a statement asking for Mussa's release; other human rights organizations, like The National Organization for Human Rights-Syria (NOHR-S), cited his detention as illegal under the Syrian Constitution with no judicial powers to oversee that his rights are protected under the law.
The Kurdish Left party is one of eleven Kurdish active political organizations, none of which is allowed to practice any activities inside the country.
