RPS Statement on the US Raid Inside Syria

For Immediate Release

Washington DC, October 27, 2008

The Reform Party of Syria condemns the Assad regime for its continued support of al-Qaeda Islamists, extremist Palestinians, Ba'athist rejectionists, and Arab infiltrators who systematically have been given logistical support by the Assad regime to cross Syrian borders into Iraq to inflict upon its innocent population death and destruction.

Through subjugation of our people in Syria to economic depravation and stifling of their liberties, the Syrian government is able to militarize civilians for acts of violence and terror activities, which brings upon them also death and destruction.

In both cases, the Assad regime escapes accountability because in both cases innocent Iraqis and innocent Syrians are dying while the Assad regime, to this day, enjoys immunity from an international community grown accustomed to its dehumanizing acts of terror and paralyzed into inaction, which further fuels violence and perpetuate the cycle of terror.

Syrian dissidents and activists in dire need to help Syria grow as a nation with civility as its primary goal rather than resistance, ask the Bush administration, as it winds down to its eight-year term in office, to take more compelling action against the Assad regime and brings about real change to the Syrian landscape. It is the United States, regardless of who its next president will be, that will inherit Assad's legacy and its people who will suffer from Assad remaining in power as much as the Syrian people are suffering today from Assad's shortsighted policies.

Assad father helped bomb the U.S. Marines barracks in Lebanon 25 years ago and his son follows with similar policies of terror and destruction today against not only the United States but more importantly against Syrians, as well as Iraqis, Israelis, and anyone that stands to challenge his ever increasing influence using violence as the weapon of choice.

History will recall that the US lack of determination in the face of a secular regime of terror, as dangerous, if not more, than an Islamist regime of terror shrank its positive influence in the region. If the Middle East cannot outgrow people like Assad and Ahmadinjead, organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah, with US help, the divide between Muslims and Christians, Muslims and minorities, will reach a boiling point at a time when the United States cannot but pay attention to its own domestic issues leaving the Middle East teetering on the verge of total chaos and in the hands of evil men with dire intentions.

It is now or never if we want to stir Syria to effect positive change.
