Young Berivan freed after 9 months
Berivan S. was released from Diyarbakir prison today after spending nine months in jail. Though the decision to free her is to be linked to the approval in parliament of the amendments of the TMK (Anti-Terror Law) regarding children under 18, only 200 of the 400,000 children are able to benefit from the changes made to the law.
Berivan's case has become a symbol for all those children in prison and her release is now being used symbolically by the Turkish state.
We want to thank all of you for your support, especially those of you who took to time to write to Berivan and the your MPs.
This is a day of victory for those campaigning for Berivan, it goes to show how far we can go if we try, the Guardian article was one of these victories that brought the issue to daylight in the UK and lead to meetings in the parliament. So please continue making your voices heard, write to papers, write to your MPs. There still many kids in Turkish jails as the battle to have them release goes on.
